Frequently Asked Questions

What does a patient advocate look like in practice?

Imagine that you or a loved one was recently diagnosed with cancer. At their appointment with the oncologist, they are too overwhelmed and frightened to process the information and make decisions. Or imagine that your parent, spouse, or partner is diagnosed with dementia and you are in a place of becoming a caregiver, or arranging for their care. A patient advocate works solely for the client and family, assuring positive outcomes.

How is Blue Ridge Patient Advocates different from other patient advocates?

We have over two decades of experience as medical providers with the knowledge and time to help you understand your medical diagnoses as well as any procedures, treatments, or medications. Since Blue Ridge Patient Advocates is completely independent, you can rest assured that all medical decisions are made with your interest in mind. Other entities and facilities may employ healthcare advocates but their allegiance is to their employer while our allegiance is exclusively to the patient- not a hospital, insurance company, or any other entity.

Will insurance cover pay for the services? How much will it cost?

Insurance does not currently cover independent patient advocates. We are dedicated to working with a variety of clients and provide clear, upfront pricing and bill on an hourly basis. We do have a few spots for sliding-scale payments.

What geographical areas do you serve?

While the main office is located in downtown Asheville, NC, in-person visits are also available within 30 miles of Asheville, including in-hospital. We are available virtually nationwide.

What age range do you work with?

At Blue Ridge Patient Advocates we work with clients and families across the lifespan, often helping parents of younger children navigate a serious medical diagnosis, in addition to adults of all ages

Do you replace my primary care provider?

While we are licensed medical providers, the role of a professional advocate is as a consultant therefore no treatments, prescriptions, or diagnosis are provided.

Will my medical records be secure?

We adhere to HIPPA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) that provides data privacy and secure provisions for safeguarding medical information

Do you work with transitions of care and/or moving for elderly or medically complex family members?

Absolutely. During hospitalizations we work with your case worker, discharge planner, and physician to assess appropriate facilities and availability. We also work with clients who are moving to a new area to ensure that they receive continuity of care by working to establish them with appropriate providers.
